Project Blockbuster was born from Cold War-era paranoia, seeking to give America an edge in the arms race of superhuman warfare. The program's early work focused on a formula derived from the DNA of the alien Starro, aiming to induce rapid, controlled evolution in human subjects. However, the process proved unstable, often resulting in immense physical strength at the cost of mental regression and grotesque mutation, as seen in its most infamous success, Roland Desmond, the Blockbuster. The project was later co-opted by the Light, who used its resources to further their own ends, including the creation of the Genomorphs—a slave race of psychic and physically powerful creatures designed to serve and power their secret base beneath Happy Harbor.

'The formula is ready,' she said, her voice flat. 'This time, it will work.' The injection hissed, and the man screamed. His bones cracked and reformed, muscles swelling grotesquely. His eyes, once human, turned a dull, vacant red. He was strong, so strong, but the mind behind them was gone—a hollow shell of rage and muscle. Another success for Project Blockbuster. Reader's Guide

Project Blockbuster's stated mission was to create a stable, controllable super-soldier for national defense. Its true agenda, orchestrated by the Light, was to develop a compliant metahuman army for global domination. Confirmed members include Dr. Helga Jace (lead scientist), Professor Ivo (contributor on genetic engineering), and Lex Luthor (financial and political cover). Their primary base was a hidden facility beneath the Cadmus Labs complex in Metropolis, later expanded to include a secret laboratory in Bialya. The project's influence peaks in Season 1, providing the Light with the Genomorphs and the Blockbuster formula. By Season 2, the program is largely dismantled after exposure, but its technology resurfaces in Season 3 and 4 through metahuman trafficking and the Markovian experiments.
