Lore & Background
Jaime Reyes was a normal high school student until he stumbled upon a mysterious blue scarab in a cave. The scarab bonded to him, forming a powerful exoskeleton that could manifest weapons, shields, and flight capabilities. However, the scarab was originally a weapon of the alien race known as the Reach, designed to conquer worlds by overriding its host's will. Jaime's strong sense of self and moral compass allowed him to resist the Scarab's programming, forging a unique partnership where he commands the armor, not the other way around.
In Their Own Story
The desert wind whipped across the border town as Jaime Reyes walked home from school, the Scarab humming uneasily beneath his skin. Suddenly, a pulse of energy lit up the sky, and the armor erupted around him without his command. 'Host, multiple targets approaching. Recommend immediate lethal force.' Jaime gritted his teeth, forcing the cannons to retract. 'No, buddy. We talk first.' The Reach agents descended, and Jaime knew this fight would test not just his strength, but his humanity.
Reader's Guide
Jaime Reyes joins the Team in Season 2 as a key player against the Reach invasion. His origin begins when he finds the Scarab in a cave near El Paso, bonding with it and becoming its host. Unlike previous wielders, Jaime maintains his personality and fights the Scarab's genocidal directives. Key relationships include his close friendship with Bart Allen (Impulse) and a mentor-like bond with Blue Beetle predecessor Ted Kord's legacy. His signature abilities include flight, energy blasts, shields, and adaptive weaponry. Over the seasons, Jaime's arc explores his struggle for control, his growing trust in the Scarab, and his role as a bridge between human and alien perspectives.
